DOST-CALABARZON LAUNCHES ITS SECOND MINI SCIENCE CENTRUM IN THE REGION

DOST-CALABARZON, in collaboration with the Department of Education - Quezon (DepED Quezon), Cesar C. Tan Memorial National High School, the Local Government Unit of Quezon (LGU Quezon), the Provincial Government of Quezon, and the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST), successfully launched its second Mini Science Centrum in CALABARZON last April 5, 2024, at Cesar C. Tan Memorial National High School in Quezon, Quezon. This project aims to bring interactive science exhibits to students in remote communities, offering them hands-on learning experiences that can ignite their interest in science, technology, and innovation (STI). These centers showcase interactive exhibits covering a wide range of scientific concepts and processes, providing an engaging educational environment for students. The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr.; DOST Undersecretary Sancho A. Mabborang; Prof. Fortunato T. de la Peña, Chairman of the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST) and former DOST Secretary; Ms. Emelita P. Bagsit, DOST-CALABARZON Regional Director; Dr. Rico J. Cabangon, OIC-Director of the DOST-FPRDI; Hon. Keith Micah D.L. Tan, Representative of the 4th Congressional District of Quezon Province; Hon. Angelina “Helen” D.L. Tan, Governor of the Provincial Government of Quezon; Hon. Juan F. Escalano, Municipal Mayor of Quezon, Quezon; Hon. Jose Ramil R. Arquiza, Municipal Mayor of Alabat, Quezon; Hon. Atty. Alberto T. Escobarte, Regional Director of DepEd CALABARZON; Dr. Rommel C. The said launching is part of DOST-CALABARZON’s Enhanced Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (ECEST) for the Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), aiming to empower economically challenged communities by providing science and technology interventions that address their specific needs in areas such as health, education, disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation, and economic development. In his speech, Secretary Solidum stresses the importance of integrating science and technology into institutional management, emphasizing the need for accessible science education for all, regardless of their level of intelligence. He asserts, “We want science, technology, and innovation na maging accessible at available sa mga Pilipino, especially the youth. Quality science and technology education should be within reach even in Geographically Isolated Disadvantaged Areas. Science and technology is inclusive at hindi po exclusive.” This statement reflects the Secretary's commitment to ensuring equitable access to scientific knowledge and opportunities for all citizens. The first Mini Science Centrum was established in Polillo, Quezon on September 12, 2023, making this launch the second Mini Science Centrum in the CALABARZON Region. Following this launch, they visited several DOST-CALABARZON projects in Perez, Alabat, and Quezon.
